is the 6th largest country in South America. Venezuela is bordered to the west by Colombia, Guyana to the east, Brazil to the south and Caribbean Sea to the north. It is approximately 912,050 square kilometers. The capital city is called Caracas. Other large cities include Maracaibo, Valencia, and Barquisimeto. The total population is approximately 29,000,000 people with a growth rate of 1.468%.The current president is Nicolas Maduro .The monetary unit of Venezuela is the Bolivar. This country was colonized by Spain and it gained its independence in 1821 after a long struggle because the indigenous people resisted the colonial rule.

Venezuela is divided into 23 states and the system of government is the federal government. Venezuela boasts of high biodiversity ranging from the Andes Mountains, huge Amazonian forests, a large Caribbean shoreline, llanos which are fertile plains, a small desert, biggest lake in South America and also the Angel falls which is the highest waterfall in the world. The country experiences two seasons dry season which last from December to April and the wet season which last from May up to November. The average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius with high areas such as Andes experiencing lower temperatures. Rainfall varies from 430mm to 1000mm per year.

Venezuela hosts a number of animal and bird species. There a total of 1,417 different bird species and the major ones are the ibises, kingfishers and ospreys. Major mammals include jaguar, capybara and the giant anteater. Most of these mammals are found in the Amazonian forests. Venezuela also hosts about 3,900 fungi species and over 25,000 different species of orchids. Venezuela has 43 national parks example the Canaima, Morrocoy, and Mochima National Parks and also a reserve area for the Yanomami tribe.

The major political blocs in Venezuela are the leftist bloc and the opposition bloc. These blocs consist of smaller political parties in the country. The president is elected by a vote for a term of 6 years. The president is the head of state and government and he or she can be re-elected back to office as many times as possible. The president appoints the vice president and his cabinet. Three representatives are elected from each state and capital district while 3 seats are reserved specifically for representatives of the country’s indigenous people. The voting age is 18 years and above and voting is voluntary.

Venezuela has large oil and natural gas reserves. It is ranked among the highest producers of crude oil. Main oil deposits are found beneath and around Lake Maracaibo, Gulf of Venezuela and the Orinoco River basin. Most of the hydropower is generated from Guri Dam. The discovery of oil has helped to raise the economy of Venezuela. The form of transport in Venezuela is air transport, water transport, road transport and railway transport although this type of transport is limited.

The national language of Venezuela is Spanish. There also exists other recognized languages example English which has become an important language since the oil exploration in the country. There are four ethnic and racial groups with Mestizo being the largest ethnic group followed by the whites, blacks, Afro-descendant and other races. Most of the population follows the Roman Catholic religion. The popular sport is Baseball followed by basketball and football.
